House in Cape Town City Bowl
Location:
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
Description:
Renovation and addition to an historic house in the densely populated city bowl of Cape Town.
The original house dates back from the late 19th century with a decorative front facade added in the 1920's. The brief from the client was to create an open living environment, more conducive to modern living in the house. Further, the house has great views over table bay and the city bowl that are not being taken advantage of by the current architecture.

Garden Before & After
The first response was to relocate the kitchen and dining space to the rear, with a strong connection to the garden. A steel beam, painted black and expressed in the design, was used to support the roof and allow the space to connect to the rear garden. A new outdoor dining terrace, braai and pool was created and shaded by a timber and steel pergola.

Passage Before & After
During construction, an underground storeroom was discovered, the walls of which, are built in a unique concrete technique with large aggregate of table mountain granite. The decision was made to convert this space into a wine cellar and all the plaster was removed to expose the concrete walls. A glass inlay in the timber floor brings light in from above and custom designed metal wine racks suspend the wine bottles in front of the textured walls.
