House Green
Description:
Retirement house for an Architect and his wife. Designed in collaboration with David Green.
Site & Context:
Hermanus in the Western Cape of South Africa, is a small fishing village situated on a coastal plain between the Olifantsberg Mountains and the Indian Ocean. The site has ocean views from the second storey toward the south, and mountains views toward the north.
Concept:
The proposed scheme places the building between these two geographical elements of the mountain and the sea, opening up predominately toward the mountains to take advantage of the north orientation. Living spaces are arranged around a large common outdoor terrace, as well as more intimate courtyards that trap afternoon and morning light.
Materiality:
Bagged brick and lime wash plaster, characteristic of the historic fisherman cottages of the region is utilized as the primary material expression.
