Thesis - The Design of a new facility for the National English Literary Museum, Grahamstown, South Africa
Description:
The thesis came as a response to an existing proposal to construct a new facility for the National English Literary Museum in Grahamstown. The proposal (currently under construction), gave rise to a set of concerns including the following. dislocated site; inappropriate modes of exhibiting literary artefacts and a lack of regional identity.
The thesis engaged from first principles, the people involved, the programme required and the context in which the project is located.
The result is a building interwoven into the dense colonial fabric of Grahamstown, serving as a museum, an extensive research facility, a small theatre and a valuable resource for the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.
Concept:
The essence of the museum is that of a community place, rather than a traditional institutional building, interwoven into the society and the existing urban fabric.
